Renaming Lehigh Avenue to Danny Torres Avenue
For decades, artist Danny Torres has used the walls of Kensington as a canvas to reflect the pride, struggle, and resilience of the Puerto Rican community in Philadelphia. His murals line Lehigh Avenue between Orianna Street and 6th Street—vivid, public declarations of presence and identity.
Now, we’re asking the city to recognize that legacy. We are petitioning to rename this stretch of Lehigh Avenue to Danny Torres Avenue in honor of his lifelong contributions as a cultural worker, community leader, and visual historian.

Why Rename the Street?
This stretch of Lehigh Avenue tells a story—one painted on walls by Danny Torres, a cultural icon who has used public art to preserve Puerto Rican identity and empower his community for over 30 years.
We’re calling on the City of Philadelphia to officially rename this corridor Danny Torres Avenue while he is still here to see it.
Who Is Danny Torres?
A lifelong artist, community leader, and muralist, Danny’s work includes the celebrated Héroes Latinx on Julia De Burgos Elementary School as well as the Juan Antonio Corretjer mural, as a collaborator, at Orianna & Lehigh and numerous others throughout the Fairhill and Kensington sections. His art uplifts heritage and memory in a neighborhood shaped by migration, struggle, and resilience.
